Set to Seek the Lord

(Small Group Prayer Guide) So often we fall into a rut of praying for me and mine.  If all is well in our world, we tend to think this is the case globally.  Unfortunately, that is not so.  There are many things that desperately need us to pray.  Make time this week to seek the Lord on behalf of needs bigger than your small world. Ask Him to guide you to the global causes that need your prayers.

Proclaim God’s Glory

  • Take a few moments to praise God for who He is.
    1. Have each person in the group share who God is to them (in a few words)
Ex. Jehovah-Jireh (Provider), friend, saviour, etc.
    2. Take a couple of minutes to praise God for who He is

Seek the Lord through personal transformation
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2)

Conformed: to be similar or identical; to be in agreement or harmony with
Transformed: to change the nature, function, or condition of, to convert; to change drastically the appearance or form of

  • Have a time of repentance.
    1. Read the following questions:
      • Is there any unconfessed sin in my life?
      • Do I have unforgiveness in my life?
      • Do I have bitterness in my life?
      • Are there any doubtful practices or activities in my life?
      • Do I always obey the Holy Spirit promptly?
    2. Have time of prayer asking for forgiveness where needed.

Seek the Lord for strongholds to be broken

  • Name a stronghold that needs to be broken.
  • After each person gives an answer, ask if anyone knows a scripture to pray.
  • Lead in prayer, taking authority over that stronghold.

Ex.  Pride, laziness, complacency, lack of concern for souls, depression, oppression, immorality, idolatry, hatred, bitterness, alcoholism, drug addiction, pornography, etc.

Seek the Lord for an outpouring of the Spirit
In the Bible, when there was an outpouring of the Holy Ghost, the following things happened:

  1. They spoke in tongues (lives were transformed)
  2. There was fresh vision (they received direction)
  3. Great boldness to preach the Word fell on them
  4. Healings, signs, and wonders followed them (miracles happened)
  5. Unclean spirits came out (deliverances took place)

Pray through each of these points, praying specifically that each would happen in your church.
Now pray each of things would happen globally.

Seek the Lord for the liberation of God’s people

  • Have prayer for the following:
    1. For each church member to find their purpose and do it
    2. For each church member to fulfil the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) (go and teach)
    3. For each church member to fulfil the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40) (love the Lord with all thy heart – love thy neighbour as thy self)
    4. For each church member to go above and beyond (present yourself a living sacrifice)
    5. For each church member to give themselves consistently to the Word of God and prayer
  • Now pray for this to happen in ALL churches globally.

Seek the Lord for souls

  • Have each person say the name of a backslider.
  • Pray for each person that was mentioned.
  • Pray for backsliders globally.

Seek the Lord for church visitors

  • Pray each visitor would have a positive and uplifting visit.
  • Pray each visitor will have a desire to visit and again.
  • Pray each visitor will make the decision to turn their life to Christ and experience salvation through repentance, baptism in Jesus’ name, and the infilling of the Holy Ghost.
  • Pray each visitor will feel loved and cared about and will find their place.

Seek the Lord on behalf of missionaries your church supports

  • Pray for the missionary
  • Pray for the missionary’s family
  • Pray for the missionary’s church or place of meeting
  • Pray for the city/nation the missionary is working in.
  • Pray for the missionary’s finances and health.
  • Pray for the missionary’s spiritual strength.

End your time of prayer with praise and worship.

Thank God for His goodness and take time to bless individuals who are in your group.
